Arts council to sponsor family dance March 13

The McCall Arts and Humanities Council is sponsoring a family dance featuring the band Identity Crisis at 6 p.m. Saturday, March 13, in the multipurpose room at McCall-Donnelly High School. The free event will feature five decades of rock music and a chance to learn new and old dance steps. Dance lessons will be offered starting at 5:30 p.m. by Howard and Christina Wright. Refreshments will be available, and those planning to attend should wear socks or nonmarking, soft-soled shoes.

State snowmobile ride slated for Feb. 27-28

The annual Idaho State Snowmobile Ride has been scheduled for Saturday and Sunday, Feb. 27-28, with rides staging from the West Face Parking Lot on Idaho 55 west of McCall. Riders should check in by 10 a.m. There will be three levels of rides: basic, mostly trail riding; medium, trail with some boondocking; and expert, mostly boondocking. A dinner sponsored by the Idaho Land Fund will be held at Bear Creek Lodge at 6:30 p.m. Saturday. McCall Rec offers beginning Nordic ski lessons

Alpine to host Women’s Fantasy Night Feb. 12

The Alpine Playhouse will host “Women’s Fantasy Night” at 7 p.m. Friday, Feb. 12, offering women the chance to perform on stage as a fundraiser for the playhouse. In past years, performances have included singing, dancing, flying, ranting, laughing, reciting poetry or other writing, showing art work, playing instruments, performing stand-up comedy and participating in spontaneous improvisation. The event is for women aged 16 and older only, and performers are encouraged to keep their performances short. Performances can also be spontaneous and improvisational, and trained improvisers will be on hand for anyone who wants to participate in a scenario. Torch Light Parade

The 2010 Winter Carnival Children’s Torch Light Parade has been scheduled for Friday, Jan. 29, starting at the Community Congregational Church at 901 First St. in McCall. The parade line-up, with hot chocolate and cookies for participants, will be held from 5 p.m. to 5:45 p.m., with the parade itself scheduled to start at 6 p.m. Participants are reminded of the Winter Carnival theme, which is “Wild Idaho,” and costumes are encouraged. Children may also create a magic lantern to carry, and instructions are available at the McCall Chamber of Commerce, at its Web site at www.mccallchamber.org, at the McCall Public Library and at area elementary schools. Parade sponsors are Krahn’s Home Furnishing and McCall Drug.

Mardi Gras Parade

Mardi Gras parade to reverse direction this year. The McCall Winter Carnival Mardi Gras Grand Parade will reverse course for the 2010 event.
The parade will still start at its traditional time of noon, Saturday, Jan. 30, and the route through downtown McCall will remain the same.
However, the parade will begin on First Street, turn east onto East Lake Street and then turn south onto North Third Street. That is the reverse direction of previous years for better photo opportunities. The parade will once again have a Mardi Gras theme with the traditional variety of unusual drill teams, whacky floats and the unexpected.

The session is sponsored by Sustainable Outlook for Long Valley, which hopes the session will generate ideas for older adults who are looking for ways to approach retirement with integrity and grace despite such worldwide challenges. McCall Rec to begin fly-tying class

A beginning fly tying class will be offered through the McCall Recreation Department on Wednesdays beginning Wednesday and continuing through Feb. 17. The classes will run from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. and will be taught by local fishing guide Fern Krumm of McCall Angler. The cost is $10 per session or $45 for the entire program. A minimum of three participants is needed for the class to be held, and a maximum of six people will be accepted. McCall dancer to perform with ‘Nutcracker’ troupe

Emily O’Morrow of McCall will perform during the Eagle Performing Arts Center’s presentation of “Nutcracker” next week.

Speed Signs, Paintings & Rock Band

Riggins event Saturday to pay for speed signs
An event in Riggins on Saturday will raise money to post radar-operated speed signs at each end of town.
The event will be held at the Seven Devils Restaurant in Riggins and begin at 6 p.m. with a spaghetti feed.
An auction follows at 7 p.m., and the River Rock Band begins playing at 9 p.m.
The fundraiser is sponsored by the Canyon Communities Coalition, which is hoping to educate drivers about the 25 mph speed limit without resorting to writing tickets.
The plan is to install signs at each end of town with radar guns that flash the speed of the oncoming car and remind the driver of the 25 mph speed limit.

The New Meadows Senior Citizen Center will hold its 10th annual “Christmas in the Valley” craft bazaar and baked food sale Saturday, Dec. 5, from 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the center, 102 N. Commercial St. A limited menu hot lunch will be offered for a minimal cost between noon and 2 p.m.
Vendors can rent tables for $20 each. The building will be open at 8 a.m. to allow time for set up. For questions call the Senior Citizen Center at 347-2363.

Foresters to host Loveall benefit Nov. 27

An event to benefit Vern Loveall starts at 6 p.m. Friday, Nov. 27, at The Foresters Club & Doghouse Saloon and features live music, a silent auction and raffles. Loveall, of Crusty’s Pizza, recently had a brain tumor removed and is scheduled to start radiation treatments soon. Proceeds from the event will help offset the expenses to Loveall and his family. The musical line-up includes Carter Freeman at 6 p.m., Jay Nelson at 7 p.m., Joel Hellerman at 8 p.m., Jonathan Warren & The Billy Goats at 9 p.m., Scott Tyler at 10 p.m., Jeff Crosby at 11 p.m. and Voice of Reason at midnight.
Event organizer Chris Sinclair, who is a good friend and employee of Loveall, will serve as master of ceremonies.
Help is needed and organizers said auction and raffle items can be dropped off at Crusty’s Pizza during business hours.
Among the items being sought are homemade crafts, art, service vouchers or any other items that might bring in some money. Financial donations can be made to the Vern Loveall Crusty’s Fund at the McCall offices of US Bank, Sterling Savings Bank and Idaho First Bank.

Tillotson Trio concert to support Crystal’s Corner

The Paul Tillotson Trio will perform in McCall on Friday, Nov. 20, to benefit Crystal’s Corner. The concert will begin at 7 p.m. Nov. 20 at North Fork Lodge in McCall. Wine and snacks will be served. Crystal’s Corner is the name given to fundraising efforts to aid Crystal Heimgartner, a McCall resident who is being treated for ovarian cancer. Tillotson says his mission “is to play great improvised music, deeply touching the souls of audiences around the world, spreading the joy that is created while creating music that comes from love.”

Ski club announces Canned Cuisine Cook-off Nov. 20

The Payette Lakes Ski Club-Nordic has scheduled a Canned Cuisine Cook-off contest from 6:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. Friday, Nov. 20, at the Little Ski Hill to benefit the club and the local food bank. To enter the cook-off, pay a $20 fee, bring a dish prepared in accordance with the rules, and bring the nonperishable contents of the dish to donate to the food bank. Taste-testers are also needed. Those wishing to serve in that capacity must pay a $10 fee and bring three cans of food for the food bank. The fee buys 10 tickets for tasting food, beer or wine, and a voting ballot. Additional tickets are available for $1 each. Prizes will be awarded in three categories: appetizers, main courses and desserts, plus a special category of Smokejumper Hors D’oeuvres. Little Ski Hill Benefit

Teton Gravity Research will have two showings of its new ski and snowboard film, “Re:Session,” at 7 p.m. Friday, Oct. 30, at North Fork Lodge, and at 7 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 1, at the Alpine Playhouse. Doors open at 6 p.m. for both shows, and beer and wine will be available at North Fork Lodge. Admission is $10 per person, and all proceeds go to the Payette Lakes Ski Club, which operates the Little Ski Hill. The film, shot on both film and high-definition cameras, includes scenes from Alagna, Italy, during one of the deepest snow seasons on record, along with powder skiing in Poland, Colorado, Utah, Alaska and other locations.

Fitness Challenge Benefit Event

A fitness challenge, a luncheon and concert are among the events to be held to benefit a McCall woman battling cancer, on Saturday, Oct. 10, Legend CrossFit will host a fitness challenge starting at 11 a.m. at Brown Family Park. Participants will be challenged to complete as many rounds as possible in 20 minutes consisting of five pull-ups, 10 pushups and 15 squats. Alpine Village to host Oktoberfest fundraiser for MCPAWS

Adaptive Wilderness Sports of McCall will host a paintball tournament on Saturday, Aug. 29, at Camp Pinewood in McCall.
The “Last Person Standing” paintball tournament will be double elimination. Teams can have two to five members, and the registration fee is $20 per person before Saturday, Aug. 22, and $30 after that date. The entry fee includes participation in the tournament, use of a paint gun, 50 paintballs per game and safety equipment. The event is a fundraiser for Adaptive Wilderness Sports, a nonprofit organization that provides recreation for children and adults with disabilities. Valley County Fair presents ‘Family A-Fair’

Alpine Playhouse to perform ‘Bug’ for summer production

Alpine Playhouse announces its summer production of “Bug,” by Pulitzer Prize Winning playwright Tracy Letts.
Performances are scheduled for July 31 and Aug. 1 and Aug. 5-8, with performances starting at 8 p.m. each night. Tickets will be available in advance at McCall Drug or at the door for $8. “Bug” is a thought provoking psycho-thriller about love and fear mixed with a healthy dose of humor and a touch of terror. The play contains strong language, violence and subtle nudity, and is not suitable for children.

McCall library installs Rosetta Stone software

The McCall Public Library has recently installed the Rosetta Stone interactive computer software on its multimedia computer, and the program is available to help patrons learn Spanish. McCall Memorial Hospital's Center for Health Promotion is joining with other local organizations to promote National Turn Off Your Screens Week from Monday - Friday April 20-24. The purpose of the event is to promote alternative activities for children and famiies other than watching a screen and participating in such family activities as playing with a pet, planting a garden, putting together a puzzle, writing letters to relatives, riding bikes, baking healthy muffins, inviting friends to come over and paint a picture, or going on a scavenger hunt -- just to name a few activities. An "all you can eat" crab feed has been scheduled from 2pm to 7pm on Saturday March 28 at Riggins City Park as a fundraiser for the 25th anniversary of the Salmon River jet boat races. Activities will include a beer garden from 2 to 7pm, the crab feed from 3 to 6pm, a jam session from 2 to 4pm and a performance by Muzzie Braun from 4 to 7pm. Bingo Begins March 21

The McCall Senior Citizens Center has scheduled bingo for 7pm Saturday March 21 at the center at 701 First St. in McCall. Animal Tracking session March 14

A field seminar on animal tracking on snowshoes will be held Saturday, March 14 at The McCall Outdoor Science School. After meeting at the school at 4pm, participants will hear an hour-long "chalk talk" on animal tracking and winter animal adaptations. From 5 to 7pm, the group will explore Ponderosa State Park on snowshoes followed by dinner at 7pm. The cost of the event is $10 per person. For more info call 208-634-3918.

The Hunt Lodge wins Ice Sculpture Contest's Grand Prize

For the fourth year in a row, The Hunt Lodge Holiday Inn Express wins Grand Prize in The McCall WInter Carnival Ice Sculpture Contest. In keeping with this year's theme "Fantasy In Ice," the sculpture by John Schulz and crew displayed a Camelot-theme castle with a knight slaying a dragon. This was the largest and most complex work yet for Schulz, and deemed by many to be his best yet.

Wine Tasting & Art Auction at Winter Carnival

The McCall Chamber of Commerce's wine tasting and Showdon WIldlife Sanctuary's art auction has been scheduled for the first Friday of the Winter Carnival at Shore Lodge in McCall. The event will run from 5pm to 9pm on Friday, January 30. Tickets are $25 and include a commemorative wine glass, wine tasting and light appetizers. Proceeds from the event will benefit the chamber. Winter Art Class Offered

The McCall Parks and Recreation Department is joining with the McCall Arts and Humanities Council to offer a winter art class for parents and children aged 3 to 5. The four-part class will be held Thursdays starting in January and ending Feb. 12. Activities will include tie-dye, gyotaku and papier-mache. Registration is open now and ends Friday, January 16.
